Saturday, March 9th, the Makindu Children's Program presents "An Evening of Jazz, an Evening of Hope" featuring the legendary Mel Brown Trio, with Jof Lee and Tim Gilson, and the Wou Western Hemisphere Orchestra… Show more which will play the music of Count Basie. The music starts at 7:30pm at the historic Old Church in downtown Portland at SW 11th and Clay.
This event marks the 15th anniversary of the founding of the Makindu Children's Program a Kenya/US partnership created to provide the basic life needs of nutrition, education, health care and training for more than 1200 orphans and vulnerable children in a rural region of eastern Kenya.
Event organizer and MCP board member Diane Baxter points to the generous gift the Mel Brown Trio and the Who is sharing. For many years Mel Brown has been the one of the most active, influential, and respected artists in the area jazz scene. "This is simply a great opportunity for jazz lovers to experience an evening of top-notched jazz Mel Brown Trio and that of the Western Hemisphere Orchestra! Any chance to hear the music of Count Basie should not be missed," she said. The talented and dynamic students of Western Oregon University, where Baxter is a professor of music, make up the big band. Her colleague, Dr. Keller Coker, leads the ensemble. "We are excited to bring our accomplished group to Portland, and for such a great cause the children of Makindu."
Winnie Barron of Brownsville, Or, co-founder of MCP, says, "The purpose of the Makindu Children's Center (MCC) is to give hope to those who have little. Our goal is simple - to help them make a good life for themselves. Our collaboration with the people of Makindu truly reflects the saying "it takes a village to raise a child."
