In 1977 Robin Lane founded Do Jump Movement Theater to foster a unique art form celebrating both individual creativity and community spirit. Its mission:
Do Jump engages audiences and students using extremely physical theater, music and the unexpected to awaken the senses and inspire a feeling of possibility and awe.
In 1983 Lane and company renovated the historic Echo Theatre, a former silent-movie house, creating what has become an important focus of arts and culture in southeast Portland. The very next year saw the founding of the Do Jump Movement Theater School, teaching Do Jump’s unique style of movement. Classes encourage physical confidence, freedom, and grace in a creative environment.
The company has toured extensively throughout the US and Canada, including extended runs at L.A.’s Geffen Playhouse, New York City’s New Victory Theater, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. Artistic Director Robin Lane has designed large-scale spectacles for events such as the Nike World Masters Games, the opening of Portland’s west side light rail, and for ArtQuake, Toronto’s Winterfest 2003, Portland’s Rose Festival parade, Contemporary Crafts, the opening of the Pacific Northwest College of the Arts, and the opening of the Western Culinary Institute’s new facilities.
Do Jump’s tours, like all of its shows, are as flexible as a Do Jump performer. From a "no tech" show in a school gymnasium to an aerial extravaganza on Broadway, Do Jump can fit any bill.
From the company’s inception, Lane’s vision for Do Jump has been consistent: Do Jump’s performances are a provocative blend of dance, acrobatics, aerial work, humor and original music that celebrate creativity and community.
