San Francisco is underlain by five terranes or blocks comprised of rocks that formed in different plate tectonic settings with fascinating histories. We will examine the only natural exposure along the northeastern shoreline of the city and we will hike down to view sandstone and shale turbidites and explore adjacent sea caves. We will also learn about Ice Age sand dunes, erosion and sediment transport along Ocean Beach, the 1906 earthquake, natural hazards, and climate change.
