Singing the Golden State

California has been an inspiration for American popular music since the days of the Gold Rush. This traveling exhibit, developed by the California Society of Pioneers, spotlights two magnificent collections of sheet music covers dating from the 1850s through the 1930s: the Frederick Sherman Collection of the California Society of Pioneers, and the personal collection of James M. Keller, the exhibit's curator and Program Annotator for the San Francisco Symphony.

Accompanying the visually striking… Show more covers will be a variety of postcards, programs, trade cards, and other ephemera documenting California's place in the history of American popular music, as well as audio and video recordings of the songs represented in the exhibit.
