Timothy Shanahan is Distinguished Professor of urban education at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he is Director of the Center for Literacy and chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. He was on the development team for the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards and is an author of California Treasures. He is a principal investigator on the National Title I Study of Implementation and Outcomes: Early Childhood Language Development. Professor Shanahan was director of reading for the Chicago Public Schools. His research emphasizes reading-writing relationships, reading assessment, and improving reading achievement.
