Orson Well’s long-lost silent comedy Too Much Johnson was made in conjunction with a Mercury Theater stage production of William Gillete’s 1894 play. This fast-paced farce of mistaken identities tells the story of Augustus Billings who is carrying on an extramarital affair under the made-up identity of a Cuban plantation owner named Johnson. Upon arrival in Santiago along with his wife and mother-in-law, he soon learns that the real Johnson actually exists
