This imaginative 1991 opera by prolific American composer Philip Glass skillfully brings the 1950 French film directed by Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) to the stage.
Like the movie, the opera retells the legendary Greek myth of the ancient poet Orpheus and his wife, Eurydice by placing the story in 20th century Paris. Orphee becomes transfixed with a princess who is the patron of up-and-coming poet Cegeste --- until Cegeste's mysterious death.
