While attending the University of Southern California in the late 50s, director Kent Mackenzie made his first film, the controversial short documentary Bunker Hill, chronicling the planned demolition of a vibrant urban community. Excited by the challenge, Mackenzie turned away from the mainstream moviemaking of the 1950s and embarked on a new kind of cinema. Returning to Bunker Hill and with nonprofessional actors, The Exiles portrays twelve hours in the life of three Native Americans as they struggle with poverty, boredom and indifference.
