They were formed in the late 1950's. The group rocketed to stardom when they auditioned and landed a part to impersonate The Rhythm Boys, known group that traveled in the 1920's with Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra and where Bing Crosby started his fame. They later signed under Warner Bros. Records and only released two singles but were not successful and moved on to record under the Capitol Records label in 1961. They released their first hit, "The Way You Look Tonight" which landed on Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1962 " When I Fall in Love" landed in the Top 10.They followed with many other Top 10 hits, in 1965, "Theme From A Summer Place". Bob Engemann resigned later in 1967, and was replaced by Jim Pike's younger brother, Gary Pike. The hits kept on coming in 1968, "Goin' Out of My Head"/"Can't Take My Eyes Off You","Put Your Head on My Shoulder", and in 1969 "Hurt So Bad". The last hit single was in 1972, "Love" a solo done by Pike.
They have received many accolades, 32 Billboard Magazine chart albunms, 11 gold records, and 5 Grammy nominations. Jim Pike sold the Lettermen name to Butala and left the group in 1972. In 1981 to this day have been known as Reunion. Since 1961 they have put on over 100 performances a year to 2000. As of 2009 Tony Butala is still the original member of the group while other members have come and gone for various reasons. Current members are Donovan Tea, Mark Preston, and Tony Butala
