This singer and bandleader is a gourmet of fine Southern culture, regardless of what stage moniker he comes up with or which rock & roll group he is bellowing in front of or behind. In terms of the former there has been a slow evolution -- a bit like an abandoned carcass rotting away -- from Alan King to the Gdking or something like that, a stop along the way being Alan "The Goddamn" King as well as the Goddamn King. King contributed liner notes and photography to several releases by Charlotte trash rock maestros the Antiseen, a good stylistic point of reference if there ever was one. He released one split and three complete CDs with the Hellstomper combo, beginning with an item entitled Hillbilly M~~~~~~~~~~r, whose title was eventually expanded to The Real Hillbilly M~~~~~~~~~~r. Any doubts as to the authenticity of that claim would be dispelled by the song list including "Sumbitch," "Cock Fightin' Saturday Night," "Chicken Truck," and "Another Goddamn Drinkin' Song." Following Hellstomper's last stomp, Polecat Boogie Revival are the new band King put together in apparently less time than it takes to fill a shot glass. The new sound has aspects of a tribute to more traditional rock stylings such as Southern rock and plain old boogie, at least according to audience reports. In the meantime, King is also working as a tour manager with Vaginal Tap, an all-girl group. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, Rovi
