Joy Division was a post-punk band known for incorporating synthesizers and melancholy lyrics and melodies into a punk framework. Their best-known song "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was well received by audiences and critics, but didn't make it beyond the independent music scene.
The band was forced to break up after Ian Curtis, the band's frontman, hung himself. They had made a pact to disband if any member were to leave.
Not long after Curtis' death, the remaining members joined together to form New Order, which went on to enjoy greater popularity while still remaining largely on the sidelines of the pop world.
