Ruth Buzzi

Ruth Buzzi is most renowned for her long-running stint on the variety show Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. Of the 40 rotating cast members, she was one of only four who lasted the entire run on the show, 1968-1973. On the show, alongside the likes of newcomers Lily Tomlin and Goldie Hawn, Ruth Buzzi created many memorable, larger-than-life characters, like Shankuntula, the magician's assistant and the little old lady with an umbrella (best known for her catch phrase -- "Veeerrrrrry Interesting!"). For her work on Laugh-In, Ruth Buzzi was nominated three times for an Emmy and won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in 1973.Ruth Buzzi made her Broadway debut in +Misguided Tour, a musical revue, in 1959. She performed in a variety of television shows, including the That Girl series, in the decade to follow and also contributed her unique character voice to popular cartoons such as The Jetsons and Linus the Lionhearted. After Laugh-In, Ruth Buzzi starred in many children's television shows -- The Krofft Supershow (1976), You Can't Do That on Television -- as well as full-length features for children: Freaky Friday (1977) and The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again (1979). In the last two decades of the century, Ruth Buzzi continued doing voice work for cartoons such as The Smurfs, The Bearenstein Bears, and Elmo, and taking small parts in movies. But is Buzzi still best remembered for her humorous comedy work on television just in it's heyday? As they say on the show, you can "bet your bippy" on that one. ~ Sandy Lawson, All Music Guide
