Steve Gorn

Steve Gorn is a master of the bamboo flute. A disciple of the late bansuri master Sri Gour Goswami of Calcutta, Gorn continues to expand the tradition with his innovative recordings and performances. In addition to several impressive solo albums, including Luminous Ragas (released in 1994) and featuring four North Indian classical ragas, Gorn has collaborated with a lengthy list of world and jazz musicians. Asian Journal, released in 1979, was recorded with Nana Vasconcelos and Badal Roy, while Steel and Bamboo, released in 1993, was recorded with stainless steel flute player Robert Dick. Gorn's flute playing can also be heard on albums by Glenn Velez, Andreas Vollenweider, Jai Uttal, Laura Simms, Graham Parker, Priscilla Herdman, Najima and Jack DeJohnette. In 1995, Gorn toured Europe and Africa with DeJohnette. The recipient of a master's degree in music composition from Pennsylvania State University, Gorn strengthened his understanding of eastern traditional and classical music during trips to India, Japan and Indonesia. Gorn has been a featured soloist at music festivals in Berlin, the Netherlands and Munich. Composing on MIDI synthesizers, Gorn has written scores for films, videos, theater and dance productions including Jean Claude van Hallies' adaptation of The Tibetan Book of the Dead, an ABC-TV special on the New York Jewish Museum and the PBS series The Quiet Revolution. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide
