Formed in Solihull, West Midlands, this early 60s UK pop group comprised Martin Baggott (b. 20 October 1947, Birmingham, England; guitar), Philip Cash (b. 9 October 1947; guitar), Megan Davies (b. 25 March 1944, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England; bass), Don Gould (b. 23 March 1947; organ), Al Jackson (b. 21 April 1945; vocals) and Gerry Freeman (b. 24 May 1947, Solihull, England; drums). Signed by Decca A&R representative Mike Smith, they found Top 10 UK chart success in 1964 with the memorable ‘Tell Me When’. The grand follow-up, ‘Like Dreamers Do’, was a song taken from the famous John Lennon and Paul McCartney Decca audition tape. It barely scraped the Top 20 in spite of its pedigree and the next single, ‘Three Little Words’, did no better. Always capable of finding a first-class demo, the group turned to the Kinks’ catalogue for Ray Davies’ moody ‘I Go To Sleep’. Its failure effectively signalled the Applejacks’ doom and they duly returned to the northern club scene. ~ Rovi
