Not to be confused with the famous British deejay of the same name, Carl Cox was involved in two recording acts who released singles for the tiny Empire outfit. To provide a timeline in reference to the previously mentioned platter spinner, the last of these Empire sides came out in the same year the British Cox was born, 1962. Obviously the Carl in Carl and Norman, it is somewhat less obvious which part of Johnny Brown this Cox represented; Johnny Brown was the name used on a second set of songs that appear to have been cut in the same 1960 session out of which the very first Carl and Norman single was created.
To keep track of all things of an empirical nature, "Shooting for the Moon" and "We're Happy" were on the single released by Carl and Norman, while a combination of "Time After Time" and "Little Angel came out under the Johnny Brown alias. The following year, nothing much happened involving Cox, aside from a reissue of the original Carl and Norman single. This second try may have created enough interest to erect a final single in 1962, "Climbing up the Ladder," and "Love Has No Strings." That appears to have been it for Cox's recording studio activity. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, Rovi
