Explorers in the wide-open spaces of atmospheric post-metal, North Carolina's Giant create politically charged music that owes as much to Noam Chomsky and Karl Marx as it does to Pelican and Neurosis. Initially formed in 2004 as a musical project by brothers Isaac and Zac Jones, and eventually expanding the lineup to include Derrick Wells, Kyle Whisenant, and Rodney James, the band has become a means of both artistic and sociopolitical expression. Striking a balance between heaviness and ambience, their music creates a space for the listener to get lost in, with swirling waves of guitars creating an ebb and flow between crushing doom and delay-rich atmospherics. In 2006, the group released its debut album, Song, on Southern Empire. In 2007, they teamed up with Rhode Island's Tides to release a split 12" LP on Level Plane. The band signed on with The End in 2007, and is expected to release a new full-length in 2008. ~ Gregory Heaney, Rovi
