The University of West Florida Nautilus Dance Institute, part of the Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science, will present a summer dance workshop Aug. 2 and 3 on the UWF Pensacola campus. Led by internationally acclaimed jazz dance instructor, Marcus Alford, classes will be offered for beginners, intermediate and advanced dancers, as well as for teachers. Fees are based upon dance level and observers are allowed to watch. Workshop classes include technique in ballet, jazz, modern, tap, musical theatre, pointe, lyrical, salsa and partnering techniques, as well as and fitness classes in yoga, latin Cardio dance and "rock hard ab" workouts.
Alford has served on the faculty of Dance Masters of America, Dance Educators of America, the International Ballet Competition, the University of Cologne in Germany, as well as Germany's International Tanz Wekstatt. He also performed, choreographed and taught for Gus Giordano, Jazz Dance Chicago, for 11 years. He and his wife Annie Day direct the Georgia-based company Jazz Dance Theatre South and are the founders of Atlanta's dance festival, "Jazz on Tap." Alford received a bachelor's degree in modern dance from the University of Alabama, and he is also the author of "Jazz Danceology," an instructional dance textbook.
Other instructors include Day, Michael Wardlaw, UWF Department of Theatre faculty and Michelle Lewis. Day is a National Dance Institute faculty member who has taught for the Hines-Hatchett Performing Arts Centre and JoJo's Dance Factory, both on Broadway in New York City. She is on the faculty of Dance Masters of America and the Dance Educators of America, has participated in workshops across the nation and has appeared in videos and technique books. Wardlaw was a soloist with the Cincinnati Ballet, Tulsa Ballet and the Albany Berkshire Ballet. He has also taught at the Harrid Conservatory and the Cincinnati Conservatory of Dance. Michelle Lewis, an award- winning choreographer previously based in Atlanta, has won awards for choreography from Star Systems, Starbound and the International Dance Challenge.
Other guest faculty include Pensacola's Starr Burlingame, certified by the Dance Educators of America, and Larita Carter, director of the Pensacola Junior College Dance and Cheer Squads.
