Biblical Heroes in Opera: Samson and Delilah

Come enjoy scintillating conversations between world-renowned opera expert Peter Grunberg of the San Francisco Symphony and San Francisco Opera, and Rabbi Yoshi Fenton, Associate Director of Jewish LearningWorks. The two will screen opera excerpts and explore their biblical significance.

This meeting will explore Samson, the iconic Jewish hero and controversial monk figure from "Samson and Delilah" by Camille Saint-Saens. This grand opera in three acts and four scenes is based on the Biblical tale… Show more of Samson and Delilah found in Chapter 16 of the Book of Judges in the Old Testament. It is the only opera by Saint-Saens that is regularly performed. The second act love scene in Delilah's tent is one of the set pieces that define French opera.
