Richard Bruce, PARC and Scripps-PARC Institute for Advanced Biomedical Sciences Successful development of biomedical technology often requires close collaboration between medical professionals and technologists. In its biomedical program, PARC has assembled a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to develop technology for medical applications in collaboration with colleagues at The Scripps Research Institute, Stanford University and other healthcare institutions. The technology addresses problems in proteomic research and drug discovery as well as glucose, prenatal and cancer diagnostics. For drug discovery, we developed an array of nanocalorimeters to characterize compound-target reactions. Laser printing technology has been extended to locate rare tumor and fetal cells in blood samples to provide prenatal and cancer diagnostics. We have developed a new minimally invasive device for glucose detection, that is based on optical interferometry is being developed. Dr. Richard Bruce manages PARC's biomedical systems research area and directs the Scripps-PARC Institute for Advanced Biomedical Sciences. The research area combines PARC's physical, mathematical, information, and engineering expertise with biomedical and health care expertise of collaborating institutions. Bruce received a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Since joining PARC in 1982, Dr. Bruce has worked on a broad range of research including electronic materials, semiconductor processing and devices, integrated circuit design, and hardware and software systems. He managed PARC's Computer Science Laboratory and served as president of two PARC spin-offs based on his work: LiveWorks, and PlaceWare (which was later acquired by Microsoft to become LiveMeeting ). He is also an Adjunct Professor at The Scripps Research Institute.
