Speaker Bios:
Anthony Townsend, Institute for the Future
Anthony has been researching the implications of new technology on cities and public institutions for over a decade. At IFTF, Anthony's work focuses on several inter-related topics: pervasive computing, the urban environment, economics and demographics, public and nonprofit organizations, and the media industry. Prior to joining IFTF, Anthony enjoyed a brief but productive academic career at New York University, where he directed research sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security. Anthony is active in international futures research networks, and received a Fulbright scholarship in 2004 to study the social impacts of broadband in South Korea. He was one of the original founders of NYCwireless, a pioneer in the municipal wireless movement. Anthony received his Ph.D. in urban and regional planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2003.
Anne-Marie Roussel, Microsoft
Anne-Marie Roussel is a Director of VC and Emerging Business for Microsoft, based in Silicon Valley. As such, she evaluates opportunities for Microsoft to engage with VCs and technology startups.
Anne Marie has over 22 years of communications and research experience most recently as Vice President, Research at Gartner. During her ten year career at Gartner, Anne Marie was responsible for advising private and corporate funds on strategic investment trends and individual opportunities in emerging IT companies, in the US and Europe. She also managed Gartner’s “Cool Vendors” report - recognizing the best and brightest startups in the industry – and the yearly Predictions report.
Prior to her investment focus, Anne Marie specialized in the telecommunications area, advising Gartner clients on strategic market and regulatory developments in the US and Europe. For example, she helped U.S. and European telecommunications companies redefine their strategies following the EC-mandated deregulation of telecoms markets in the mid-to-late 90s. She also headed the launch of Gartner’s Internet practice in Europe in 1996 – advising large international companies about how to deploy Internet strategies and providing guidance to small Internet startups on how to get venture funding and enter the market.
Prior to Gartner, Anne Marie served as Paris Bureau Chief for McGraw-Hill/CMP Publications and Washington Editor for Communications Week. She also served as Correspondent covering news for various McGraw-Hill magazines and newsletters based in Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, DC.
Tony Parisi, Media Machines
Tony Parisi is a technology pioneer and accomplished entrepreneur at the forefront of Internet New Media. Tony is co-creator of the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), the ISO standard for 3D graphics on the World Wide Web, and is widely recognized as an expert in standards, technologies and emerging markets for interactive rich media.
In 1995 Tony founded Intervista Software, an early innovator in real-time, networked 3D graphics technology and developed WorldView™, the first real-time VRML viewer for Microsoft Windows. In 1998 Intervista was purchased by PLATINUM technology, inc. and Tony joined the company to lead business affairs for its 3D visualization group.
In 1999 Tony founded Media Machines to provided business planning, business development and technology consulting services to companies in the bay area and worldwide. Tony is spearheading the development of Flux™, a real-time 3D technology that continues to push the envelope in interactive graphics for the web. Tony is also a lead editor and co-chair of the Extensible 3D (X3D) Specification, the new standard for Web3D graphics being developed by the Web3D Consortium
Deepak Kamra, GP, Canaan Partners
Deepak joined Canaan in 1991 after eleven years of operating responsibility in the telecommunications, computer, and software industries. Prior to joining Canaan, he held several senior sales and marketing positions at Aspect Communications, a successful Silicon Valley based startup in the call-center and switching industry. He previously held positions at ROLM Coporation, and was General Manager of a division of TRW Datacomm International. He received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Carleton University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. Deepak led Canaan's investment in Acme Packet, AllBusiness.com, Concord Communications, DoubleClick, ImpulseBuy Networks, iPrint.com, Latitude Communications, Match.com, PriorityCall Management, Recourse Technologies, SuccessFactors, and SalesLogix. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Aperto Networks, Blackfoot Inc., e4e, Loyalty Lab, ON24, Qovia, and Zmanda.
