As a young man traveling in Italy, Mendelssohn painted watercolors of the countryside, encountered the art of ancient Rome, and sketched his most famous symphony, the Italian. The travel theme continues with Rossini;s Barber of Seville Overture and R. Strauss’s witty music to Le Bourgeois gentilhomme.
