In 1966, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale established the Black Panther Party for Self Defense in Oakland, California. By the end of the decade over a dozen Black Panther Party chapters had arisen in major cities across the U.S. In 1968, Seattle became the first chapter to form outside of California.
