The mission of the DeBartolo Center for the Performing Arts might be said to be both catholic and Catholic, both universal in scope and specific in many of its elements to the Catholic character of the University. It arises from a belief in the power of the arts both to forge stronger communities and to touch the inexpressible in the human heart. Our mission is rooted in the conviction that the arts are an indispensable element of a liberal education and an enlightened society. We believe that the arts offer a uniquely accessible path to truth, and especially to truth made manifest in the sensual world. The long history of humankind is inseparable from the staggering body of painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, music, and drama we have created. It is both our inheritance and our legacy. We are called now to develop our own creativity and "to put it to the service of [our] neighbor and of humanity as a whole."
