Bettye LaVette

Saturday, Jul 6, 2013 8:00p
Mass MoCA North Adams, MA

Bettye LaVette has one of the most singular sounds in R&B. For over forty years, she has been recording songs you will instantly recognize, yet it’s taken four decades for this Detroit-bred legend to receive the acclaim she deserves. LaVette’s velvet-rich voice and gospel-based blues have earned the admiration of Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, and Bonnie Raitt. James Taylor says “Bettye LaVette’s voice is an authentic beacon in a world of artifice.” We only wish we’d found her sooner.

Bettye Lavette

I saw Bettye Lavette on Conan O'Brien last night (Jan. 16th) and was absolutely KNOCKED OUT. I live 50 miles from Detroit, and had never heard of her! I admit I am not much of a consumer of music, but I am wondering why she hasn't got a larger presence around here, and indeed, everywhere. She was great! Her voice has a lot of feeling and character, like a cross between Aretha and Janis Joplin. Her band played PERFECT FUNKY MUSIC, and the overall performance made a convert out of me. Two big thumbs up from this dude.
