Transition Newtown Sustainable Film Series "The Power Of Community"

How can a society overcome a shock of colossal proportions? This intriguing question is the cornerstone of this interactive evening at the Hub. We’ll start by watching the documentary ‘The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil’. The film shows how the collapse of the Soviet Union sent Cuba’s economy into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity… Show more of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call “The Special Period.”
After the film screening we will have a lively discussion about what would happen if such a crisis hit Switzerland. How would society react? Would people run off? Or use the power of community to come to terms with the changes? The ‘Power of Community’ event at the Hub is for people interested this particular episode of Cuba’s history, but more importantly it is for those interested in societal change in general. It should be a vibrant evening full of interesting discussion.
