Giant blue whales are here! Each summer hundreds of blue whales feed in the waters off Newport Beach making for incredible viewing opportunities. Along with the giant blue whales, the second largest of all whales the finback whale is also present along with smaller minke whales, huge pods of common and bottlenose dolphin and the great Risso dolphin (over 14 feet long). Giant blue whales were once considered quite rare off southern California, but over the last five years this has changed dramatically with hundreds/thousands of giant blue whales spotted each year.

The waters surrounding Newport Bay offer deep nutrient rich waters that draw Gray Whales, giant Blue Whales, Finback Whales, Humpback Whales, Killer Whales, all types of dolphins, seals, fish, and numerous other marine creatures. The underwater Newport Canyon running very close to shore brings nutrient rich waters incredibly close as a result whales are often seen just outside the harbor entrance. The Laguna Beach coastline is just south of Newport Harbor and offers some of the most beautiful coastline of Southern California. The whales seem to enjoy the beauty of the coastline as well. Most whale watching cruises take in the scenic backdrops of Laguna Beach while viewing the gentle giants just a bit from shore.
