TRACKS is… Show more the extraordinary story of Robyn Davidson, a twenty-seven-year-old Australian woman who set off to cross the desolate outback, accompanied only by four camels and a dog. It was a trip that began as a pure and (many said) lunatic gesture of independence and quickly turned into an all-out battle of wits against the forces of both nature and civilization. Cocky and outspoken, Robyn Davidson's tale is at once the probing journal of a daring and stubborn woman and a wilderness adventure of the most exhilarating sort. Rick Smolan, the American photographer assigned by National Geographic to document her journey, had his own adventure tracking Robyn down in the desert. The outback of Australia, seen through Robyn's eyes and Rick's cameras is an ancient awesome landscape swept by rain, heat and dust and inhabited by all varieties of marauding life, from poisonous snakes and wild bull camels to swarms of tourists clamoring after their newest heroine, the "Camel Lady." When Robyn and her caravan reach their destination nine months and 2000 miles of outback later, their arrival marks the end of a true odyssey, an unforgettable journey and now an extraordinary film.
Through stunning images, New York Times best-selling author and acclaimed photographer Rick Smolan documents the astounding story of Robyn Davidson who trekked 1700 miles across the desolate Australian outback accompanied only by four camels and a dog. Now, Davidson's exhilarating wilderness adventure is a major motion picture staring Mia Wasikowska ( Alice In Wonderland ) as Robyn Davidson, and Adam Driver ( Girls ) as Rick Smolan, with U.S. distribution by the legendary Weinstein Company. This remarkable volume presents both Smolan's original photographs along with those from the upcoming movie. As an exciting bonus, the book incorporates Aurasma technology that enables readers to point their smart devices at pictures from the original journey and immediately view that scene as it is brought to life in the movie.
INSIDE Tracks is several books in one.
First, it’s an extraordinary documentation of twenty-seven-year old Australian Robyn Davidson’s journey. Following in the footsteps of historic female adventurers like Amelia Earhart, Karen Blixen and Beryl Markham, it was a trip that began as a pure and (many said) lunatic gesture of independence, and quickly turned into an all-out battle of wits against the forces of both nature and civilization. Inside Tracks is a probing look at a daring and stubborn woman, and an exhilarating wilderness adventure story.
Photographer Rick Smolan, portrayed by Adam Driver in the film, had his own adventure tracking Robyn down several times during her nine-month journey to document her trip for National Geographic magazine. With Inside Tracks, Smolan combines his own award-winning photographs of Davidson’s expedition (many of which have never been published before) with inspiring quotes from the book Tracks (Vintage, 1995) – Robyn’s best selling account of her trip. What emerges is a suspenseful, courageous narrative much in the spirit of West with the Night and Out of Africa, where one woman bravely pits herself against endless obstacles and odds.
Secondly, this book is a fascinating journey through Tracks, the film. Weaving together images from the movie and still frames extracted from actual movie footage, Inside Tracks allows readers to see how Robyn’s epic adventure was brought to life on the silver screen.
When Robyn and her caravan of camels made it all the way to the Indian Ocean nine months and 1700 miles of outback later, their arrival marked the end of a true odyssey and a legendary trek. Now, it is an unforgettable movie and a fascinating illustrated book containing more than 200 photographs, plus essays from Robyn Davidson, Rick Smolan and Tracks director John Curran.

Says Smolan, “One big question has always loomed over Robyn’s trek. When tens of millions of National Geographic readers first experienced Robyn’s story, when more than a million people in 18 languages read Tracks (the book) and now when hundreds of millions of movie-goers watch the film Tracks, the first question people always ask is, ‘Why did Robyn make this trip?’ It’s the one question that Robyn has never felt the need to answer. Perhaps allowing each person to reach his or her own conclusion is what makes Robyn’s unlikely journey so compelling. To me, what matters is that Robyn permitted herself to listen to the little voice inside that so many of us ignore.”
