How To Be Loved is part of the Polish Filmmakers NYC's New Voices, Ancient Echoes: Polish Women In Film series.
Barbara Krafftówna’s performance as Felicja, an acclaimed actress reminiscing about the troubled love she experienced amidst the German occupation of Poland, is thought by many to be the single best role by a Polish actress ever. Scripted by acclaimed novelist Kazmierz Brandys, the film is a supreme melodrama of lost illusions, in which Felicja saves the life of a man she hopelessly loves… Show more (played by Ashes and Diamonds’ Zbigniew Cybulski), only to gradually realize he is not worthy of her affection. The film’s style, both gentle and fearless, marks one of the finest directorial achievements by Wojciech Jerzy Has, who went on to make such classics of baroque imagination as The Saragossa Manuscript (1965) and Hourglass Sanatorium (1973). Although much more subdued than those films, How To Be Loved remains a stunning example of subtle psychological yearning, shot in beautiful black-and-white by Polish veteran cinematographer, Stanisław Matyjszakiewicz. The film won awards for Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Actress at the San Francisco Film Festival, and was nominated to Palme d’Or at 1963 Cannes Film Festival.
The screening will be followed with a Q&A with Andrzej Krakowski, professor of film at Cuny and a collaborator of Wojciech Jerzy Has.
