In 1964, after five years with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, saxophonist Wayne Shorter joined Miles Davis – thereby completing the lineup of Miles’ “Second Great Quintet,” alongside pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams. Shorter wrote extensively for Davis, including “Prince of Darkness,” “E.S.P.,” “Footprints,” “Sanctuary,” and the title tracks of the albums E.S.P. and Nefertiti.
