Kagura: Shinto Temple Dance from Early Japan With Miho Takayasu (Japan)

Monday, Mar 18, 2013 6:30p
Segal Theatre Center New York, NY

The oldest known Japanese performance practice, Kagura dance predates and influenced Noh theatre. It continues to be interpreted by Japanese performers, including Miho Takayasu, a performer who combines the Kagura she learned as a child in Shinto temples with her sensibility as a modern dancer. Takayasu joins us from Japan to discuss and demonstrate the history and contemporary life of this dance. Introduction by Andrzej Wirth and translation by Aya Ogawa.
