Passwords: Graham Foust and Samuel Frederick on Ernst Meister
Poet Graham Foust and German literature scholar Samuel Frederick share their exquisite new translation of the penultimate book by existential German poet Ernst Meister (1911-1979), In Time’s Rift.
Often compared to Paul Celan for the difficulty and brevity of his poems, Meister created a body of work both emotional and strange. Like George Oppen, he fell silent in the decades immediately following World War II before returning to poetry in his final decades and earning the Büchner Prize.
