Blue Magic, an R&B vocal quintet whose members were Theodore Mills, Vernon Sawyer, Wendell Sawyer, Keith Beaton, and Richard Pratt, was formed in Philadelphia and signed to Atlantic Records in 1973....
Preceding the Gamble & Huff -led Philly Soul explosion by a few years, Philadelphia's Delfonics were one of the most popular soul vocal groups of the late 1960s and early '70s. Marked by gorgeous harmonies, a hazy funk groove, and William Hart's gentle lead vocals, the group's hits like "La La Means I Love You" and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)" provided the soundtrack to a distinct era in urban America....
A trio of sisters with a strong gospel base, the Emotions (based in Chicago) were one of the leading female R&B acts of the '70s. Lead singer Sheila Hutchinson and her sisters Wanda and Jeanette were only teenagers when they crashed the soul charts in 1969 with the engaging "So I Can Love You," but they sang gospel as children and enjoyed secular fame locally before signing with Memphis-based Volt and working with producers Isaac Hayes and David Porter....
Although aided and abetted by the savvy producer Thom Bell, Philadelphia's smooth R&B group the Stylistics would not have garnered their hits and acclaim without their soaring harmonies and Russell Thompkins's distinctive falsetto....
