Commandeering History
In September of 2011, I signed a contract with the Cunningham Studio, thereby becoming the final artist to mount a production in the venue before it forever ceases to be the Cunningham Studio.
Back in the summer I poked around and found out nobody was planning a "Goodbye Forever Performance Party" for what has been for decades the artistic home of Cunningham, and a meeting ground for experimental… Show more performance. After the fanfare for the Cunningham Dance Company, it looks like their historic studio space will slip into nonexistence without so much as a tip of the hat.
So New Yorkers won't be getting the institutional, sentimental, funeral-like goodbye of wine, cheese, and guest speakers that is traditional to such an occasion. Don't act so surprised or disappointed, though the legacy of Cunningham can be done with a salute, it can also be done by throwing a wild card down the black hole of memory to see if it ever lands.
So please accept this invitation from an artist irrelevant and irreverent to the dwindling cosmos of Cunningham. The idea of artistic inheritance is tyrannical and imaginary anyway, so this is an act of historical commandeering. This is a dance that struggles with its presence in a historical space, with its anonymity in the face of historical importance, with its emergence into existence in a space that faces demise.
So, in collaboration with experimental opera artist Esther Neff, visual artist Jillian Rose, and costume artist Kym Chambers, I present Run Little Girl, named after a poem John Cage wrote at the age of four and a half.
