The pharmaceutical industry is one of the largest single industries on earth. World wide sales topped $839 billion in 2011. That's more than the total gross domestic output of most countries. In 2009 the industry spent $65.3 billion on research and investment, which was less than 10 per cent of gross revenue.
The film places particular emphasis on the fact that the potential side effects of many drugs can often be worse than the condition they are treating. Several individuals in the film blame over-prescribed behavioral drugs on youth suicides.
