Our 2014 Urban Heroes
Dwayne Boudreaux began working in the grocery business in 1978, one of the few opportunities available to young black men right out of high school. When he was in his mid-20’s, he started working at Circle Food Store, where he learned then that the business was a vital community center for the residents of Tréme. When the store flooded during Hurricane Katrina, it devastated the local community. After nine years of hard work and determination, Dwayne reopened the historic store in 2014. Today, he continues to serve the people of New Orleans by providing high quality, affordable groceries.
Bart Everson is a writer, an artist, an activist, a teacher, a baker of bread, a husband and a father. In addition to being co-creator of ROX, the first TV show on the internet, and a founding member of the Green Party of Louisiana, he is also past president and founding member of Friends of Lafitte Corridor . In that capacity, Bart was recognized as Louisiana's 2013 Cox Conserves Hero for his critical volunteer service to grow support and advocacy for the Lafitte Greenway, a rail-to-trail opportunity in the heart of New Orleans now under construction. Since 1999, Bart has worked in faculty development at the Center for the Advancement of Teaching at Xavier University of Louisiana.
Lee Stafford has a BA in History from Tulane University and together with Dr. Leslie Brown founded the NOLA Locavores and New Orleans Eat Local Challenge . After seeing cities like Portland and Seattle organizing Eat Local Challenges, Lee recognized that New Orleans was the place where local foods and cultures would be more fitting (and more fun) to celebrate and began organizing the first event in 2011. Lee also owns Saturn Screenprinting located on O.C. Haley Blvd. and is active in the effort to revitalize Central City.
