Event Details
The Spirit of 1848 Caucus is excited to be reviving a past tradition of hosting a public health history tour at APHA’s annual meeting, this time jointly in collaboration with the Praxis Project.
The tours are being offered at no cost to participants, thanks to the generous support of the Praxis Project. We consequently are limiting the number of tour slots to 40 people, selected on a first come, first serve basis. Hidden History Tours will lead the two tours that receive the most interest. We cannot guarantee that you will be placed in your first choice as each tour will be capped at 20 participants.
Note: although we are offering the tours for free, any donations to help offset the cost are most appreciated. When you sign up,you will see the option to make a donation (which is totally voluntary and does not affect your likelihood of obtaining a space on one of the tours).

This is the story of the first African American and white workers General Strike – November 1892. About 122 years ago, one of the greatest united strikes happened here in New Orleans. Less than 30 years after the end of the Civil War, and with the betrayal of Reconstruction, black and white workers united to walk out for joint demands. The tour acquaints you with today’s New Orleans public health care. We share an overview of the struggle to defend public health care from the efforts to privatize all public health care. The tour highlights the struggle to save Charity Hospital. The tour includes about 20 sights and stops. See the abandoned Charity Hospital that suffered minor hurricane damage. See the new hospital complex, currently being constructed, that forced displacement of hundreds of residents and property owners.
