Bear approaches his subjects in the realist approach of Gustave Courbet and George Bellows, but his work is consumed by a 21st century lamentation for the degraded state of the natural world and the reluctant part each of us plays in the unfolding tragedy. Bridges, ships, and human forms in nature serve as motifs for contemplating notions of liberation and progress in light of the biosphere’s diminishing robustness.
