Mid-Manhattan Central Library

455 Fifth Avenue at 40th St., New York, NY, 10016
(212) 340-0849 - Website

Established in 1970, the Mid-Manhattan Library houses the largest circulating and reference collections in the Branch Libraries of the New York Public Library. Shelved in open stacks on five floors, the subject collections cover art, education, consumer health, history, job information, language, law, literature, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, and more. These collections are geared to meet the needs of college undergraduates, graduate students, and serious adult users.

The Popular Library on the first floor offers multiple copies of best sellers and current general interest material: Fiction, non-fiction, and non-print media formats. The Picture Collection on the third floor contains one of the largest picture collections in any public library with more than one million reference and circulating images covering all subject areas. A Computer Commons located on the fourth floor provides free Internet services and computer classes for the public. Numerous free public lectures and programs are hosted in the sixth floor conference rooms.

The Mid-Manhattan Library serves as a link between the neighborhood branch libraries and the in-depth, non-circulating collections of the New York Public Library’s Research Libraries.
