Once I allowed myself to enter into unknown territory with no clear idea of how to get myself through or out of it, I felt much freer and much more willing to engage with difficult material.
Tracy K. Smith is a prize-winning African American poet who teaches at Princeton University. Her first book The Body's Question was awarded the 2002 Cave Canem Poetry Prize by Kevin Young. She is also the author of Duende, which won the 2006 James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets. Smith has received a Wallace Stegner Fellowship and awards from the Rona Jaffe and Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundations. Presented with the Poetry Society of America.
Lisa DeBenedittis Ph.D. is Associate Dean and Assistant Professor of Design Research at Parsons The New School for Design. Her current research looks at psychoanalytic perspectives on engagement with the designed environment. She is currently a candidate in Psychoanalysis at the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association. Her work has been published in Design Principles and Practices: An International Journal, Crossing Design Boundaries, and Making Sense of Health, Illness and Disease, and is a previous recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities award.
