East meets West as China’s oldest Western-style orchestra offers Iris devoilée (Iris Unveiled), a dreamy reflection on the “eternal feminine” featuring traditional Chinese voices and instruments. Representing the West are Mussorgsky and Rachmaninoff, two giants of Russian Romanticism. The 22-year-old piano prodigy Yuja Wang, hailed by Gramophone Magazine for her “blazing technique and a rare insinct for poetry,” is the soloist in the monumental “Rach 2.”
