Live theatre is all about the audience/actor connection. In fact, complete information about the way a play will work is impossible without input from an audience, which is why theatres have previews if they can. The energy between the actors and their audience is the last layer to be added to the creation of a piece of theatre. Once a show is ready to open in every other way, previews provide the chance to utilize audience response to add nuance and allow the cast and crew to fine tune they learn things like where laughs will or will not happen, what s clear, what s not, what parts might be moving too fast or too slow. The preview audience is a very important part of making a show the best it can be by opening night.
