The Opulent Object: Tapestries by Jon Riis with Sculpture by Richard Mafong and Mike HarrisonThursday, October 3 - Sunday, January 5, 2014The Art Museum will present an exhibition filled with metal, wood and tapestries by three Atlanta, Georgia artists and enhanced by opulent colors, rich textures and complex forms. Jon Eric Riis's works build on an age-old tapestry tradition that was practiced in antiquity in places as diverse as Egypt and Peru. Riis links his work to these ancestral textile traditions… Show more by using historical iconography and traditional techniques to articulate contemporary themes. Richard Mafong and Mike Harrison worked collaboratively to design and create the metal and metal-wood objects in the exhibition. Though these luxury objects were initially created from elemental materials, they have been made opulent by the addition of gemstones, rare woods, gold and silver. Approximately 40 tapestries and 20 sculptures will be included in The Opulent Object.Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.Exhibit hours: Tue-Sat, 10am-4pm; Sun 1-4pm
