Thirty years ago, aliens arrive on Earth -- not to conquer or give aid, but -- to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the aliens' welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent (Sharlto Copley) contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9.

Definitely not the typical Sci-Fi junk, this movie was quite good. Good acting, good directing, good script. Much better than expected.

So much content was packed into this movie. Every time a new question popped up, twelve answers to questions you never asked came. and by the end of it, your head's spinning and you're watching people getting popped like over ripe grapes. The story was amazing and the top notch cinematography really set the mood, pace and environment for this movie more than any of the special effects, which by the way did more than their job in suspending disbelief.
Now I don't usually say this. I am usually the "contrarian" that says "sometimes a pickle is just a pickle" but this movie really did a decent job at pointing the camera on humans. The "Prawns" were definitely painted as a odd worker class of sorts, you could tell pretty easy the ones shown weren't the guys who made the ship. But the humans really treated them like they were just pests, as a viewer I actually had a hard time disagreeing with some of the things they did... But other things are flat out inhuman...

Sure, the concept of aliens is not new, but this movie deals with them in a much different light and plays out in a rather interesting fashion. There is so much to this story that isn't even expressed in the trailer, so I feel like almost anything would qualify as a spoiler. This is also a tale of human interaction and Apartheid. I think because we are painted so poorly, it really did have to take place in South Africa to be acceptable by some folks.
The story takes place over about a 4 day period, and the scene weaving is done well enough to make the time skipping seem pretty fluid. I highly recommend this movie.
And to the guy that cautioned against bringing your kids.... duh!? It's rated R

This is one of those movies, that if you watch with an open mind can affect you profoundley. This movie should be viewed by every adult. From the people in the highest positions of power, to the guy making minimum wage. This movie can be directly related to the way that humans (supposedly the highest animal on the planet), the way that we as a specdies treat others of our own species, that may be of a different color or religion, with violence and persecution, this is the 21st century, and still the amount of intolerance is mind boggling. Surely one day mankind will see that we are one species no matter what color or religion we are.

Do not take the kids.
Repeat. DO NOT TAKE THE KIDS.
This is a fairly grim science fiction movie, and it deals with some very serious issues. That being said, if you're interested in seeing a brutally frank movie that explores some of humanity's least savory characteristics in a serious way, this is the movie for you.
The main character, Wikas van der Meerwe, is an anti-hero, which is not to some people's taste. If you're looking for a simple-minded good guys vs. bad guys shoot 'em up, move on. It has moments of extreme violence and cruelty, and is not for the weak of stomach. I found it thought provoking and fascinating from beginning to end.
It's also kind of miraculous how good the special effects are, in spite of the film's relatively tiny budget. I'm definitely going to see it again.

This could be the nothing more than the desensitization of the human populous to prepare the world civilization for the actual reintegration of the aileons that people speculate about. There could be that plot only for those of us to recognize the significance of the title itself as code for area 51. Take the sum of 5 and 1 to make 6, now inverted makes 9, hmm. Even the book of Genisis tells us who made us and even the fact that the words "our image" in the description of who made Adam leads to more than one or multitudes maybe (aliens). Any way I thought the movie was worth seeing and really enjoyed the mutation idea and the three year promised return to reverse the mutation in the probable sequel District 10. Now take the number 10 having two digits...10 divided by 2 is 5 and the use the number 1 after the number 5 because the 0 is just a place holder to disguise the 1, so you get 51...things that make you go hmm.
