I saw Choke with a group of friends and our reactions were mixed:
One friend was annoyed because the marketing made it look like Choke was going to be an irreverent sex comedy like "Forty Year Old Virgin" or "Superbad."
Another friend was annoyed by a certain plot hole big enough to drive a small Yugoslavian car through.
Another friend thought there was too much casual sex; "Strangers don't just meet and screw."
Another claimed he read the book and movies never live up to the author's original prose. He then was surprised by a key plot twist and that convinced me he didn't actually read the book. Douche.
Anyway, yes, Choke has it's flaws. It is not "LOL" funny the who time. It is much more in the same vein as "Fight Club" (also written by Chuck Palahniuk). It has funny moments, but the overarching theme is actually very dark and nihilistic.
I say, if you are a huge fan of "Fight Club" and know that you're seeing a fairy serious film with funny moments (as opposed to a funny movie with serious moments), you should dig it.
