I went in with pretty low expectations since movies rarely make the original better, right? Well, I was happily surprised. Although I can't say too much about the acting or a few cheesy scenes and lines, the action and CG was superb.
Action starts from the very beginning of the movie and draws you in to expect more and more. The action just kept building more and more. From the beginning to the end of the movie: action action action.
Also, many parts of the movie made me LAUGH because of the hidden jokes and the interaction between characters.
A few facts were wrong in the movie and a few scenes were especially cheesy, but given all of the other good things about the movie, it's still a MUST SEE movie.

If you liked the cartoons then you'll really like this movie. Theres' lots of fast action and transforming, with the old battle of good vs. evil.
The only bad thing I have to say about this movie is that the viral advertising for Chevrolet got kinda annoying but other than that it was a movie that I would see again.

This is definitely a movie for the old Transformers buffs out there. That being said even those no history of the TV show can enjoy this. It is both visually stimulating and action packed. Many hidden jokes are strewn throughout the movie for the hardcore fan, but you wouldn't feel alienated for not getting them as they flow in nicely with the plot.
The story is taken as seriously as giant robots from outer space can be taken, and there are plenty of good laughs to be had in awkward situations that could only occur in a universe where robots roam space in search of a unit of immeasurable power. I could say the movie is violent due to all the combat in the movie, but you could feel pretty safe bringing a child to this anyways due to the lack of gore of any sorts.
