Aboard the USS Enterprise, the most-sophisticated starship ever built, a novice crew embarks on its maiden voyage. Their path takes them on a collision course with Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan commander whose mission of vengeance threatens all mankind. If humanity would survive, a rebellious young officer named James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and a coolly logical Vulcan named Spock (Zachary Quinto) must move beyond their rivalry and find a way to defeat Nero before it is too late.

I have never watched a Star Trex episode in all my life. My husband wanted to see this so I agreed. I was not disappointed at all. There was some good action & I liked the actors in the movie. My husband gave it a 4 stars so between the both of us we agreed upon the 3 1/2 stars. I'm sure there will be another one released & I'm sure I will be going to see that one as well.

I very much enjoyed this movie. The cast and story were in keeping with the Star Trek I enjoyed all those years ago.
I was, however, disappointed with the presentation. The screen in the theater where I viewed the movie was obviously not wide enough to accomodate the entire picture, as the words in the opening were cut off at the far right and left.
Movie great, presentation so-so. All in all well worth the money.

I will never understand these trekkies. You people do know what retconning is, right? You do realize that Star Trek is insanely full of it throughout its history, right? In case some of you forgot that your pal, Gene Roddenberry, has done quite a bit of it himself:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_retcons#Star_Trek_in_various_media
They're using the same excuse they use every time they decide they want to change things: it's an alternate universe, things are different. Either you accept this one or you accept none of them. Get over it, nerds.
Having said as much, the movie was fantastic. I'm not much of a trekkie myself -- I find the series to typically be very boring -- but I truly appreciated this one. I was afraid that JJ Abrams would ruin it by completely ignoring the need for, you know, a plot. I was afraid he'd do what he's done in other movies, in that he'd just let the explosions do the talking. Thankfully, he did not.
This movie is to Star Trek in the 60s what the new Battlestar Galactica series is to the 70s series. It's a kick in the teeth. It's a story about human nature where space is the backdrop, not the other way around. The mark of a good show or movie is asking: if I took the setting out of this show, would it still be good? The answer is a big yes.
Do yourself a favor and see the movie - you will not be disappointed. Ignore the people who are afraid of change. Change is a good thing, especially in this situation.

WARNING: This review contains spoilers.
At the age of six I was glued to the TV when an episode of a new show Star Trek aired. The first episode. 29 seasons, ten movies, umpteen books, short stories, novellas, and articles later, let's just throw it all in the dump and start over. Cause goodness knows we can do it better than the guy who created it all, right? I mean we weren't happy screwing things up with ENTERPRISE and a captain who should have been on the Good Ship Lollipop. They lost me when someone couldn't even be bothered to leave a post-it note about the borg coming in 200 years. Archer tackles the Xindi and suddenly everything in the future is named after crew, pets and Archer is the first captain of the Enterprise.
Now comes the movie. Here's a spoiler...Vulcan's blown up, everything is changed sideways, and the only real bad guy is Leonard Nimoy.
Now to the rating. The acting was supberb. Sylar and Spock are so much alike it is scary and a little twisted. The kissy-face with Uhura was just dumb, though. Pine and everyone else did a great job, up to and including the computer not understanding Checkov. (Guess Gary Mitchell got a day job?) Unfortunately, Nero's part could have been played by the old card-board cutout of the Hulk from the movie theater just as well.
Effects were great - too great. Lost all continuity on the Enterprise and the way it looked even before the time-line went whooie.
And whoever wrote the script should go back to doing the logos for matchbook covers.
With a nearly limitless set of possibilities for story-lines, how in the world did anyone manage to screw it up so completely? With this cast (less Bana) this SHOULD have been the best Star Trek movie ever.
It does pave the way for the studio to do whatever it wants in the new alternate time-line. I guess they weren't happy with a nearly infinite set of possibilities. Nope, got to smash everything and redo what they've already done cause they do not have an original brain cell amongst them. Okay, I'm tired of ranting now - won't do any good. Lucky I can't time-travel.

Who loves the beginnings of things. I liked the whole thing with the exception of the stolen Corvette...which seemed to be something stuck in on hind-sight. A small quibble about an very entertaining movie.

I went in worried that this movie would be "Teened Out" in its modernization, and bastardized with product placements. While there were a few "teen moments" peppered throughout the movie, it was barely distracting, and the only product placement was a mention of "Budweisser Classic" when ordered at a bar(Acceptable) and a Nokia Placement(Blatant).
First off, the antagonists were Romulans, and really played well. The main 'bad guy' was a misplaced construction worker on a mining ship that found its way into the past via a rip in space created by a supernova getting canceled out but not until it destroyed his home world. His pain was believable. It wasn't the usual Star Trek Blind rage polotics that were generally along the lines of "It just is". What this guy went through was something along the lines of watching the fire department pass a poor neighborhood in order to save a wealthy one. But only because all the fire hydrants in the poor neighborhood were broken. Basically, there was nothing they could do about it.
Anyways, the cast was spot on, everyone was in their element even though they were on an alternate timeline, fate still requires them to play out their roles. Kirk was less of a "Maverick Bad Ass" and more of a relentless focused guy who refuses to give up no matter what one of the 6,271 barriers are in his way... His bubbling through the universe falling into his fate was a very well crafted piece of work.
This movie is an open door to any newcomers to the Star Trek universe. There's no need to know what happened on Episode 9 season 3 etc. However, there was more than enough tie-ins to Star Trek lore to keep this movie at least parallel with the existing history. If anything it had enough of the hallmarks of the TV series, but with just the right twist to make them real, and modern. (Green Seductresses, Blips and bleeps, The guy in the Red Suit getting creamed...(lol))
Go see it, fan or not.

It was a great way to start off the summer movie blockbuster season. I am not a "trekkie" but this can make me one. I liked how they intro'ed each character how they became to be on the Enterprise and kept to the true personalities of each person. I wouldn't mind a sequel. I personally think this is up there with Star Wars.

I'm not a trekkkie and I have to admit that I haven't seen THAT many Star Trek episodes either. So I am judging it without much background knowledge about any of the characters or the storyline.
The confusing parts was Spock's love connection, which seemed oddly placed. And why was Winona Ryder casted as Spock's mother? Couldn't they have casted a random old lady?
That being said, I truly enjoyed this movie. There was tons of action from beginning to end and each of the characters had their moment to shine.
I expected a good movie and I got a good movie.

WARNING: This review contains spoilers.
I am not one who typically leaves bad reviews for movies and such, but I have been a trekkie for 16 years, watching every episode of every Star Trek TV series along with all of the movies, and this movie totally disregards all Star Trek continuity.
Spoilers ahead...
First of all, Vulcan gets destroyed. Come on! Throughout all of the TV series Vulcan has been in existence, so now all of Star Trek's future that has been written is now done away with. And Spock's mother gets killed. She was on the original series and on Star Trek IV as well, but now she has never existed. And what's up with this relationship between Spock and Uhura? And what's up with Spock being so emotional?
I understand all the stuff about alternate timelines and all that, but all of the TV series and movies have gone through such great efforts to preserve the Star Trek timeline and now it has been completely disregarded. In my opinion, this movie is not Star Trek canon, so I'll just stick to watching all of the DVDs I have. I don't plan on seeing anymore Star Trek movies if they keep making this junk. This was nothing but nonintellectual story telling and overblown special effects. I'm surprised Leonard Nimoy agreed to appear in this farce. He must have needed the money. I wish now they would have given the Star Trek franchise a respectable ending, but since everyone is enjoying this movie so much, they'll undoubtedly keep making more movies. This is not Gene Roddenberry's vision.

I reallly enjoyed it as a Star Trek fan from the 60's. The only criticism I had was the main antagonist "Nero" played by Hulk actor Bana, was cast only for his face not acting ability, he delivered some of his more emotional demanding lines in a very human bland way instead of like an enraged alien, Chekov's accent was grating on the nerves. Great FX, both Spock's were great, McCoy was terrrific, but the gratuitous love thing twixt Uhura and Spokc was too contrived to crate a love interest that never existed. Good alien creatures in the snow, good score.
Fast moving which is what a movie should be.

This was a GREAT movie, it goes back and explains the main characters from their youth and beyond!
Scotty had rememberable funny lines and, at first I too was a bit skeptical of introducing a NEW Kirk but after watching the movie Chris Pine is the PERFECT arrogant yet charming young Kirk. The young and old Spocks were both entertaining, explaining why Spock rebels and how this Vulcan has feelings. "Live long and prosper"

By far the best of the Star Trek movies, and certainly the most entertaining action film I'm likely to see all year. Don't let the hype scare you away. The new actors are terrific, especially Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as a pitch-perfect Leonard McCoy, and Simon Pegg as Scotty. I was a bit skeptical of Chris Pine as Kirk, but I think he nails it. The effects are absolutely spectacular, the story is fun, the villain is nasty, and the stage is set for a renaissance of this film franchise. Go see it in IMAX if possible; it was upconverted to 70mm but it looks and sounds far better than at the local cineplex.
