A group of film students runs into real zombies while filming a horror movie.
Movie theaters showing George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead near Covina, CA:
This is a solid zombie movie in that it provides you with all the core zombie movie elements: scares, laughs, dumb moves, and "what would I do in that situation" moments.
It is lower budget so the sets aren't quite as epic as I would have liked (no panning shot of an abandoned London a la 28 Days) but it suffices. Worth a big screen viewing.
After, "Land of the Dead," a surprisingly disappointing entry into the modern horror sub-genre for Zombies I was ready to count George Romero out of the race. Compared to "Shaun of the Dead" or the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" his offering had seemed flat and uninteresting. But, just like that, he's back in action with a horrific and funny return to his roots: the grainy and gritty, ultra-dark humor and drama of the originals that started it all.
