John Carter
When Civil War veteran John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) mysteriously awakes on the surface of Mars -- also called Barsoom -- he little expects the adventure that awaits him. Carter reluctantly becomes embroiled in an epic conflict among the red planet's inhabitants, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). As Barsoom is poised on the brink of collapse, war-weary Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that everyone's fate is in his hands.

I'm not sure why this movie is bombing. It's a million times better than the Star Wars prequels. I thought it was very entertaining. Not perfect, but a great Saturday afternoon ride. Lynn Collins is hypnotically beautiful, and the rest of the cast is quite good. The effects are marvelous but I'd suggest 2D instead of 3D. I'm not a fan of 3D and it looks particularly artificial in this film.

This movie was all over the place as far as settings go, but it worked for me. I’d call it an action – romantic with decent acting (given they obviously went for beauty in the lead rolls), & special effects… the story line had a few cheesy scenes and some clips that offered poor logic. That’s almost to be expected with movies now days, but it still would have been better to clean up the script. The horse chase would be one example of poor logic.
I’m more a fan of the old fashioned romances where a relationship takes some time to grow and the couple is not jumping into the sack right off; so that was a big plus. The characters had some class, honor and it was a story you could feel good about after leaving… for that I gave it a good rating.
I don’t get the big push to make women more like men in the fighting rolls. What is wrong with a women being a women? Most men want a women to be a women not a man… not too bad in this movie, but it’s there.
