you know exactly what you are watching the movie for and thats the graphics. the storyline is nothing new. the movie did not blow me away by any means but simply for aesthetic purposes the cinematography was amazing. for dollar theater prices i would say see it

Excellent eye candy. The storyline is "Fern Gully" meets "Dances With Wolves" with a little bit of "Star Wars", which leaves something to be desired. A stronger plot/story would have made it a 5 star movie.

eh - okay....

The graphics for this movie are awesome...no doubt about it. The story line? Dull and predictable. I'm glad I saw it in the theater because of the graphics, but otherwise, I would have been content to watch this one on dvd at home and fall asleep on the couch half way through.

hmmm... bootleg???

First I was wondering why someone would write a review on a movie that they admit the committed a crime to get a bootleg copy and then not watch but 1/4th of it??? After all :-) taking a chance on fines and prison just to steal a movie one would think they would at least finish the job!
Anyway, I have seen Avatar twice now and can't wait to see it again. The story line to me was great. Yes, maybe a little corny at times but the true to life examples are great. I thought the special effects were awesome and the fact that many times in our real world the ones who are supposed to back us up and do good really do turn out to be the bad guy.. heck just look at George Bush... :-) Anyway, have a great day and I think most people really loved this movie... and most of us actually PAID money to see it instead of stealing... :-)

OMG......are you guys serious? I watched a bootleg copy at home and turned it off about 1/4 the way in because i was about to go to sleep.I'm sorry but a movie has to keep my attention before I want to see more. I was confused and not sure what was going on and the story was just plain boring. I really cant see why this movie has such a rage. OK, I went back to watch some more and I still was bored to tears. And I didnt steal it(movie), a friend let me borrow it...lol...GLAD I didnt PAY to see it!...my age-49, just in case you wanted to know...lol)

Avatar plus, Avatar minus

I agree whole heartedly with everyone who loved the graphics. They were incredible.

James Cameron said he'd been waiting years to produce this movie. My question is "it took you years to think of guy goes to war, meets girl, fights for other side?" The storyline is absolutely terrible.

All told, I really liked the movie. Just realize the storyline is plain as crap.

The new technology is amazing!!! i didn't think I would enjoy this movie, butI was wrong. Except for the violence/killing, I rate this excellent, but not for young children. They could become confused about who are the good ones!

Avatar Movie

I enjoyed this movie and I didnt see anything that had to do with "Dances with Wolves in Space".
It spoke to the soul, was rich with lessons that we are all connected to our surroundings and there is always some greed monger coming to mess things up. It was a long movie but time went by quite fast because the special effects and new tech toys were interesting , believable, as well as beautiful.

I will start off by cutting into the movies major flaw. There's foreshadowing and then there's watching a movie twice in one sitting because they laid every little possible detail out 15 minutes before it was a plot element. Granted I didn't exactly go into this movie expecting any surprises, but still.

Story-wise, you get what you expect, it's an Eco-friendly "Look what big business does to planets and native cultures."

Those two things out of the way...

Holy smokes what a ride! Every little detail in this is so well done. The creatures on this planet really steal the show. They are so lifelike and quirky, they really seem real. The environment was really familiar; a decent fresh look at modern futuristic mining operation with that James Cameron "Aliens" roughness and military influence that makes this movie flow well. The jungle/forest surrounding this mine was different enough to seem like it wasn't just "Earth on another planet" but had enough similarities with earthen flora that it didn't seem too alien. Nighttime however brings an entirely different feel to the world. Bioluminescent plants illuminate the entire world in a odd "Nightclub" fashion, akward at first, but entrancing and awe inspiring as the movie progresses, the 3-D helps a lot. it's used 'correctly' through about 90% of the film. They really used it well on the actual environment instead of just little highlights and gimmicky foreground things, which was the 10% flaw, the screen edges really stand out when you do that.

Sigourney Weaver's banter back and forth with the mining operator's "Parker" was recycled dialogue from Aliens, where Singourney was railing on "Burke's" 'moral flexibilities'. A lot of the dialogue felt recycled form previous Cameron films, but wasn't tired or insulting.

Sound was decent to good. The creatures seemed a little too stereotypical as far as movie monster noises go, and most "big noises" were pretty muted.(Explosions, trees falling, gigantic creatures running, etc.) this could be due to the theater's particular sound system however. The music reminded me of video game music, repetitive, but in a way where you could listen to it for hours on a loop.

Granted I might sound like I am listing a laundry list of flaws, none of them really are. If it was done more of this or more of that, it would have ended up being a Michael Bay action film. That's not what this movie is. This is a good movie, and professionally done.

Go see it in the theaters, if you can, see it in 3-D, and if you can see it in IMAX + 3-D. But be warned, it's a LONG movie, and some peopel might not be able to handle the 3-D without feeling a little disoriented or strained.

A little bit of everything, and a whole lot of eye candy

I'm pretty sure this is what you get when you ask a room full of 12 year olds what should go into the Awesomest Space Flick Ever.

So far, I've found components ripped off of The Matrix, Dances With Wolves, any movie about colonialism ever, Jurassic Park, and even Gorillas in the Mist.

That doesn't mean it's a bad movie though - despite it being a giant amalgamation of sci-fi memes, it's still a spectacular and memorable movie.

The character, environment, and vehicle design is all top-notch. While the 3-d gimmick took a lot away from the experience (it ends up hard to see the background), it was still a fun way to spend an evening.

Do not drink a soda, unless you want to spend the last hour (read: all the epic battle scenes) trying not to pee.

Yes, the story line is a little thin but this movie sets the new standard for special effects.

Cliche and yet great

The movie is a bit run of the mill in story.but the way it is told and the visual greatness, make up for that in a huge way.u can't help but enjoy the constant eye candy that is thrown at you the entire film.definitely a must see for any sci-fi fan.the audio and musical score only help to make the movie even better.

Spectacular and corny at the same time

The story is "Dances with Wolves in Space". There's nothing in the least surprising about it. The dialogue is at best passable and at worst leaden. The characters are Hollywood stereotypes. There isn't a truly original element in sight, especially if you've been reading science fiction for more than a couple of years.

And yet, it's still worth seeing.

The trailers were a little disappointing, and led many people to conclude that the aliens would look fake on screen. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are only a couple of moments in the 2 hr 40 min run time where I thought they looked in any way unnatural. The renderings of the aliens, the animals, and the world are absolutely convincing. The integration of live action and computer generated imagery is flawless. Even though the story is disappointing, it's a visual and sonic marvel, and the 3D IMAX version is truly a spectacular experience.

If only Cameron had opted to make the characters and the plot a bit more three-dimensional, it would be the best movie of the year. As it is, it's a very mixed bag, but it's definitely worth seeing.

This Movie Was In my opinion The Best Movie ever. it has a sort of predictable Plot Line but the Graphics and the TEXTURE of the movie was unbelivable. I Personaly Recomend that You NOT watch it in 3-D Until you have Seen It In the Regular Virsion Beacuase You Cant really "see" the Texture of the movie. But It was a UNBELIVABLE movie
