Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

As bass guitarist for a garage-rock band, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) has never had trouble getting a girlfriend; usually, the problem is getting rid of them. But when Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) skates into his heart, he finds she has the most troublesome baggage of all: an army of ex-boyfriends who will stop at nothing to eliminate him from her list of suitors.

K.O.!!!

I'm going to get the fan-boy comments out of the way now, so if you haven't read the books, you won't miss much by skipping to the next paragraph: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World did an incredible justice to the first five books in the series. I say the first five, because the ending only contains some similar elements of volume six. They got the personalities down rather well (Wallace was everything I had hoped he would be), included some shots as well as artwork from the series at appropriate times, while the story remained intact. Otherwise, the aspects they removed from the film were of little importance for the most part.

The roles were chosen wisely for the most part. Yes, even Michael Cera has shown that he can change his character's stereotypical personality. Scott Pilgrim is a mash up of a nerd's sexiest of dreams, with visuals that range from comic book narrative to a video game infused reality. The soundtrack is pretty solid the entire way through, the fast paced plot keeps you entertained with action, a well thought out plot & a solid soundtrack to round out the intensity in a way to keep you pumped the entire time.

If you're a gamer, enjoy self-mocking humor or feel like watching a well put together romance film that won't fit into the standard mold, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World will entertain you for a couple of hours.

1up

This is THE date movie of the year. And as an added bonus, it won't be torture for guys!

There's so many references to all forms of media, and I know that I missed at least half of them, but the ones they used were usually the mainstream ones, which is nice because you know you probably just missed a few, and it wasn't so esoteric the move would come off as confusing or 'exclusive'. (However there were some really deeply hidden gems too, one for each corner of the nerd kingdom for multitude of nerd species to drool over.)

The story is cute in all the right ways, all the romance is toned down(maybe a little too much; The back-stories for the Evil Ex's seemed a little too tame, but it'd be really hard to have any empathy for Ramona if she was more involved.) But what was there was a nice youthful playful game. That is the single biggest win of this movie. IT IS A GAME. Everything about this movie is a series of quests laid out gratuitously for the audience to follow. All the back-stories were developed and delivered like you were getting the quest synopsis from an in-game NPC. All the fights were after a series of quests leading up to them, in a "Boss-Fight" type fashion.

This is a masterpiece in many ways. I hope there's some kind of continuation of it.

Aug 16, 2010 - Tharrah on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

This is an amazing movie, if you are familiar with video games and pop culture. If you aren't, you will likely miss more than half the jokes, but they are so far out, that you wont even know you've missed them.

Really, I can't even recommend this for someone who hasn't played more than sports games on their console, or if they don't have a console to begin with. There is so much internet culture embedded in this film that if you are thinking of watching this on a whim, it isn't really for you. Go watch the Expendables. If you saw this trailer and thought, "I want to see that!" then you will not be disappointed.

Don't Miss This
